BMW Windshield Replacement & ADAS Calibration

BMWs are some of the most complicated windshield replacements we do — and that’s exactly why people bring them to us instead of a general glass shop. The Driving Assistant system uses a stereo camera mounted behind the rearview mirror with a 50-degree field of view that detects objects up to 40 meters ahead. That camera is calibrated to sub-millimeter precision from the factory. When the windshield comes off, that precision is gone.

Most glass shops don’t have the equipment to recalibrate BMW’s camera system. They’ll replace the glass and send you to the dealer, where you’ll wait a week for an appointment and pay $400–$700 for calibration alone. At Nex, we handle both — glass and calibration, one visit, done.

BMW ADAS: What the Camera Actually Does

BMW’s Driving Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional packages are powered by that windshield-mounted camera. Here’s what it controls:

  • Frontal Collision Warning with City Braking — detects vehicles and pedestrians, applies emergency braking if you don’t react
  • Lane Departure Warning — vibrates the steering wheel when you drift without signaling
  • Active Lane Keeping — actually steers you back into your lane (Driving Assistant Professional)
  • Traffic Sign Recognition — reads speed limit signs and displays them on your dash
  • Extended Traffic Jam Assistant — hands-free driving in stop-and-go traffic on select models

The camera’s 50-degree field of view and 40-meter detection range mean even a tiny alignment change affects how the system reads the road. After a windshield replacement, BMW requires a full camera recalibration before these systems can be trusted again.

If your BMW was built after 2016, it almost certainly requires calibration after windshield replacement. When in doubt, call us — we’ll look up your specific model.

OEM vs. OE-Equivalent Glass

We use OEM and OE-equivalent glass matched to your BMW’s exact specifications. Insurance carriers often cover OE-equivalent, but with BMW’s camera system, there’s a strong argument for OEM glass — the optical clarity and thickness need to match factory specs precisely for reliable camera performance after calibration.

We’ll walk you through the options based on your vehicle, your insurance, and what makes sense for your situation. If OEM is the right call, we’ll help you make that case to your carrier.

What Does It Cost?

BMW windshield glass runs higher than most vehicles because of the technology built into it:

  • BMW windshield glass: $450–$900+ depending on model, features (heated, acoustic, HUD-compatible)
  • ADAS calibration at a dealer: $400–$700 as a separate appointment
  • At Nex: Glass + calibration together — one bill, no dealer markup

BMW owners who’ve been quoted by the dealer first are usually surprised at the difference. We’re not cutting corners — we’re cutting out the dealership overhead.

The Process

1. We confirm your BMW’s specs — model year, trim, Driving Assistant level, and any special glass features (head-up display projection, acoustic lamination, rain sensor)

2. Glass sourced — matched to your specific BMW, including the correct camera bracket and moisture seal

3. Careful removal — BMW windshields have integrated components that require delicate handling

4. Precision installation — OEM-spec adhesive, camera bracket repositioned to factory location

5. Camera calibration — static or dynamic procedure per BMW specifications, verified through diagnostic scan

6. System verification — we confirm all Driving Assistant features are reading correctly before you leave

Frequently Asked Questions

My BMW dealer quoted me $1,200+ for windshield replacement. Why so high?

BMW dealers have significant overhead and mark up both the glass and the labor. The actual glass and calibration process is the same — we use the same quality glass and follow BMW’s calibration procedures. The difference is in the markup, not the work.

Can any glass shop replace a BMW windshield?

They can replace the glass, sure. But most can’t recalibrate the camera afterward. That’s the part that matters — and that’s where shops like ours differ from a mobile glass van.

Does my BMW need static or dynamic calibration?

Most BMWs require static calibration using target boards in a controlled environment. Some newer models with Driving Assistant Professional may also require a dynamic (road test) calibration. We handle both.

Will my BMW warranty be affected?

Using a qualified independent shop for windshield replacement doesn’t void your BMW warranty under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. We use OEM-spec parts and follow manufacturer calibration procedures.
