Rivian R1T & R1S Windshield Replacement & ADAS Calibration
Here’s what most glass shops won’t tell you about your Rivian: the rain sensor is a one-time-use part. It’s bonded to the windshield with optical gel and can’t be reused. If someone tries to reuse it — and plenty of shops do because they don’t know better — your automatic wipers will malfunction or stop working entirely. That’s just one of the things that makes Rivian windshield replacement different from a standard glass job.
The other thing? Rivian’s Driver+ system uses 11 cameras and 5 radar units, with a forward-facing camera behind the windshield that controls automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, and highway assist. After a windshield replacement, that camera needs recalibration. Rivian owners in the Sacramento area have two options: wait 3+ months for an appointment at the West Sacramento Service Center, or bring it to Nex.
We’re Rivian Certified. We do the glass, the rain sensor, and the calibration in one visit.

Why Rivian Windshield Replacement Is Different
Three things make Rivians unique compared to a typical windshield replacement:
1. The one-time-use rain sensor. Unlike most vehicles where the rain sensor transfers to the new windshield, Rivian’s sensor is optically bonded and must be replaced with a new unit every time. We stock the correct replacement sensor and install it as part of the job. Shops that don’t know this will either try to reuse the old one (it won’t work right) or skip it entirely.
2. The laminated acoustic glass. Rivian uses premium acoustic-laminated windshields to keep the cabin quiet — important because there’s no engine noise to mask wind and road sounds. Aftermarket glass that doesn’t match the acoustic properties will make your R1T or R1S noticeably louder inside.
3. Driver+ camera calibration. The forward-facing camera runs Rivian’s entire Driver+ suite. After windshield replacement, Rivian requires both static calibration (target board in a controlled environment) and a dynamic calibration drive to verify real-world performance. We do both.
Rivian Driver+ Features That Require Calibration
The windshield-mounted camera powers:
- Adaptive Cruise Control — speed and following distance management
- Highway Assist — combined lane centering and adaptive cruise on highways
- Automatic Emergency Braking — forward collision detection and brake intervention
- Lane Departure Warning — alerts when you drift without signaling
- Lane Keeping Assist — actively steers you back into your lane
- Traffic-Aware Cruise — stop-and-go capability in heavy traffic
All of these depend on a correctly calibrated camera. Driving without recalibration after a windshield replacement means these systems can’t protect you reliably — the camera’s angle is off, and the system doesn’t know it.
The 3-Month Dealer Wait Problem
Rivian owners on the forums know this pain. The West Sacramento Service Center is booked months out for windshield replacements. Some owners have reported waiting from February to May for an appointment. During that time, you’re either driving with a cracked windshield or driving with an unrecalibrated camera after a third-party replacement.
Nex solves both problems. We’re typically same-day or next-day for scheduling, and we do the glass and calibration in one visit — usually 3–4 hours total.
OEM vs. OE-Equivalent Glass
We use OEM and OE-equivalent glass matched to your Rivian’s specifications. Given the acoustic lamination requirements and the camera’s sensitivity to glass optical properties, we generally lean toward OEM for Rivians. Insurance carriers may push for OE-equivalent — we’ll help you make the case for OEM when it matters for camera performance.
What Does It Cost?
- Rivian windshield glass: $500–$900 depending on R1T vs. R1S and glass features
- Replacement rain sensor: Required, included in our service
- Driver+ calibration: Included — no separate appointment, no separate bill
- Insurance: Most California comprehensive policies cover windshield replacement. We handle the claim.
Compare that to the dealer experience: weeks of waiting, a separate calibration appointment, and pricing that reflects Rivian’s service center overhead.
Our Process for Rivians
1. We confirm your vehicle — R1T or R1S, year, Driver+ configuration
2. Source the correct glass and rain sensor — OEM-spec windshield plus the one-time-use rain sensor
3. Remove the damaged windshield — carefully preserving the camera bracket and all sensor connections
4. Install new rain sensor — optically bonded to the new windshield before installation
5. Install the windshield — OEM-spec adhesive, precision-seated to factory tolerances
6. Static calibration — camera calibrated using target boards in our controlled shop environment
7. Dynamic calibration drive — road test to verify real-world camera performance
8. System verification — full diagnostic scan confirming all Driver+ features are operational
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reuse my Rivian’s rain sensor when replacing the windshield?
No. Rivian’s rain sensor is optically bonded to the glass and is a one-time-use part. It must be replaced with a new sensor during windshield replacement. We include this in our service.
How long does Rivian windshield replacement take?
Typically 3–4 hours including adhesive cure time, rain sensor installation, and both static and dynamic calibration.
Is Nex actually Rivian Certified?
Yes. We’re a Rivian Certified service provider with the equipment and training to work on R1T and R1S vehicles.
Can I drive my Rivian after windshield replacement without calibration?
The vehicle will drive, but Driver+ features won’t function correctly. Automatic emergency braking, lane keeping, and highway assist all depend on a calibrated camera. We don’t let any vehicle leave without completing calibration.
Will a third-party windshield replacement void my Rivian warranty?
No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, using a certified independent shop does not void your manufacturer warranty.
