Chevy Silverado Windshield Replacement & ADAS Calibration

If you’re replacing the windshield on a 2019 or newer Chevy Silverado 1500, the glass swap is only half the job. Behind your rearview mirror sits GM’s forward-facing camera — the one that runs your automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, forward collision alert, and adaptive cruise control. That camera must be recalibrated every time the windshield is removed.

Nex Automotive handles both: windshield replacement with OEM and OE-equivalent glass and full ADAS camera calibration in the same appointment. We’re located at 4660 Pacific Street in Rocklin, serving the entire Sacramento metro area.

What’s Behind Your Silverado’s Windshield

The Silverado 1500 (2019–2025 T1XX platform) uses a forward-facing camera mounted near the rearview mirror. This camera is the eyes of GM’s Safety Assist package, powering:

  • Forward Collision Alert — warns when you’re closing on a vehicle too quickly
  • Automatic Emergency Braking — applies brakes if you don’t react to a collision threat
  • Lane Departure Warning — alerts when you drift out of your lane
  • Lane Keep Assist — provides steering correction to keep you centered
  • IntelliBeam — automatic high-beam headlamp control
  • Front Pedestrian Braking — detects and brakes for pedestrians
  • Following Distance Indicator — shows gap to the vehicle ahead

On higher trims with the Driver Alert Package II or Super Cruise (available on 2025 Silverado EV and select HD models), the camera feeds into an even more sophisticated system with enhanced lane centering and hands-free highway driving capability.

When you replace the windshield, the camera’s mounting position shifts — sometimes by fractions of a millimeter. That’s enough to throw off the entire system. GM requires recalibration after any windshield removal or replacement.

GM’s Calibration Requirements for the Silverado

GM has updated their position on forward-facing camera calibration. It is now mandatory after windshield replacement on all Silverado models equipped with the front view camera. Here’s what triggers the requirement:

  • Windshield removal, installation, or replacement
  • Forward-facing camera removal, installation, or replacement
  • Collision repair to the front end
  • Airbag deployment
  • Ride height changes (lift kits, leveling kits, load changes)
  • Diagnostic trouble codes B1008, B395D, or B101E

Static Calibration

Performed in our shop with the Silverado stationary. We use GM-specified calibration targets positioned at exact heights and distances from the camera. Our scan tool initiates the procedure and the camera aligns to the reference targets.

Requirements: Level indoor surface, controlled lighting, properly inflated tires at OEM spec, GM-compatible scan tool, OEM calibration targets.

Dynamic Calibration

Some Silverado configurations require a drive cycle after static calibration. The truck is driven at 40–60 mph on roads with clear lane markings for several miles while the scan tool monitors the camera’s self-learning process.

Requirements: Well-marked roads, consistent speed, scan tool connected throughout the drive.

Most 2019–2025 Silverado 1500s need static calibration after glass replacement, with some requiring a follow-up dynamic drive. We perform both and verify the system reads correctly before returning your truck.

Why This Matters on a Truck

Silverados sit higher than sedans. The camera angle is steeper, and the field of view covers more road surface. This makes accurate calibration even more critical — a misaligned camera on a truck that’s already looking down at a sharper angle will misjudge distances more than the same error on a sedan.

Add a lift kit or leveling kit and the geometry changes further. If you’ve lifted your Silverado since the last time the camera was calibrated, a windshield replacement is the right time to get everything dialed in again.

We also see a lot of Silverados with aftermarket tonneau covers, toolboxes, or fifth-wheel hitches that change the truck’s loaded ride height. All of these affect camera angle. We account for your truck’s actual configuration — not just the factory spec.

> “I put a 3-inch level on my Silverado last year and never recalibrated. When I needed a new windshield, Nex caught it and calibrated for my actual ride height. Lane keep assist actually works correctly now.”

What It Costs

Windshield replacement (no ADAS): $250–$400 depending on the cab configuration (Regular, Double, Crew).

Windshield replacement + ADAS calibration: $450–$750 total. This covers glass, installation, static calibration, and dynamic verification.

Compare that to replacing the glass at a chain shop ($250–$400) and then visiting a GM dealership for calibration ($350–$600). You’re looking at $600–$1,000 if you split the work — and two separate appointments.

Insurance: California comprehensive coverage includes windshield replacement, usually with no deductible for glass. We file and manage the entire claim.

What We See With Silverados

The Silverado 1500 is the most common truck in our service area. We replace windshields on them every week. Here’s what we’ve learned:

  • Rock chips from Highway 65 and I-80 construction are the #1 cause of Silverado windshield replacements in our area
  • The heated windshield option (available on High Country trims) requires specific glass sourcing — not all replacement glass includes the heating element
  • Super Cruise-equipped models have additional calibration steps that most glass shops can’t perform
  • Tow mirrors don’t affect the forward camera, but they do affect blind spot monitoring — if your BSM acts up after a windshield replacement, the forward camera calibration may have been skipped

Our Certifications

  • ASE Blue Seal — National automotive service excellence certification
  • Ford Certified Glass — Cross-certified on GM platforms
  • Rivian Certified — Advanced ADAS calibration equipment and training
  • RepairPal Certified — Verified fair pricing and quality standards
  • MaxCare Accepted — Extended warranty coverage

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my Silverado need ADAS calibration after windshield replacement?

Yes. All 2019+ Silverado 1500 models with the forward-facing camera require calibration after windshield replacement. GM made this mandatory — it’s not optional.

Can I drive my Silverado after windshield replacement without calibrating?

Technically the truck will drive. But your automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and forward collision alert will not function correctly. You’ll likely see a warning light on the dash. We strongly recommend against driving without calibration.

How long does it take?

Glass replacement: 60–90 minutes. Calibration adds 45–90 minutes depending on whether static-only or static + dynamic is required. Plan for about 2.5–3 hours total.

I have a lift kit. Does that affect calibration?

Yes. Ride height changes alter the camera angle. We calibrate to your truck’s actual configuration, not just factory spec.

Does insurance cover the calibration?

Yes — when bundled with windshield replacement under comprehensive coverage, the calibration is included in the claim. We handle the entire filing process.
