Mazda calls this aiming the camera. Its procedure starts with a drive, and if the drive can’t finish, the camera gets aimed at a target instead. We follow the steps for your car.
The drive
Mazda’s first choice. The camera learns while we drive on roads with clear lane lines, and it has 20 minutes to finish. Snow, faded lines or tight curves can stop it.
The target
When the drive doesn’t finish, the camera reads a target set up in front of the car in our bay, on a level floor.
What Has to Be Right First
A calibration is only as good as the car it’s done on. Before we start, we check:
- Tire size and pressure
- Normal ride height
- Steady battery voltage
- Alignment and steering angle
- A clean view for the camera, with no fog, tint or adhesive

CX-5
Smart City Brake Support, which runs on the camera, was standard on the 2019 CX-5. On earlier years it depends on the trim, so we check yours.
CX-50 (2023+)
It has the Forward Sensing Camera, so new glass means aiming it again.
CX-30 (2020+)
Same kind of camera. Mazda even put out a bulletin on getting the CX-30’s calibration drive to finish.
Mazda3 (2019+)
i-ACTIVSENSE became standard on every trim for 2020. On a 2019 it depends on the trim.
CX-90 (2024+)
The camera sits behind the windshield here too and needs aiming after glass work.

How long does it take?
About 2 to 3 hours, counting the glass, cure time and calibration. If the calibration drive can’t finish and we have to aim the camera on a target, allow a little extra.
Does insurance cover the calibration?
Comprehensive coverage usually pays for windshield replacement, and the calibration is part of doing that job properly. Coverage depends on your policy, and we handle the claim with your carrier.
