Audi Windshield Replacement & ADAS Calibration

We replace your Audi’s windshield and recalibrate the front camera behind the mirror at our Rocklin shop, so you aren’t booking a second appointment at the dealer for the camera.

Where can Audi owners near Sacramento get windshield replacement with ADAS calibration?

Short answer: Nex Automotive in Rocklin does both jobs on Audis: the windshield and the front camera calibration that has to follow it. We’re at 4660 Pacific Street and work on cars from across the Sacramento area.

Why Your Audi’s Camera Needs Calibrating

Most newer Audis have a camera mounted behind the mirror, looking out through the windshield. Lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition and high beam assist read the road through it, and pre sense front and adaptive cruise combine it with the radar in the front bumper. Side assist is different: it uses radar in the rear bumper, so a new windshield doesn’t affect it.

Replace the windshield and the camera comes off with it. Once it’s back on, Audi requires a recalibration with its own target setup, and the steps change from model to model. Skip it and the camera reads the road from a slightly wrong angle, which may not set off any warning on the dash.

That’s why we don’t hand the car back after the glass goes in. The calibration happens here, before you leave.

Audi Models We Calibrate

If your Audi isn’t listed, call with the VIN and we’ll check what it has.

Q5 / SQ5

Pre sense city, lane departure warning and, with the front radar, adaptive cruise all use the windshield camera. It’s calibrated on a target board in the bay after every windshield.

Q7

Many have the driver assistance package. Turn assist, which brakes for oncoming traffic when you turn across it, uses the front camera together with the radar.

Q8 / SQ8 / RS Q8

These can carry several radar sensors as well as the camera. Glass work only touches the camera behind the mirror.

A4 / S4 and A5 / S5

On an A4 or A5 with driver assistance options, lane departure warning uses the windshield camera, and pre sense front and adaptive cruise pair it with the front radar.

A6 / S6 / A7 / S7

Usually a camera plus several radar sensors. After glass work, the camera is the part that needs calibrating.

e-tron and A3 / Q3

Any of these with a camera behind the mirror needs it calibrated after a new windshield. That includes the 2022+ A3, the first US model year of the current generation.

What Happens at the Shop

1

Confirm the glass. We look up your Audi’s exact windshield, including camera bracket, acoustic layer, heated wiper area and head-up display if it has one.

2

Replace the windshield. We cut out the old glass and prime the frame before setting the new windshield in urethane.

3

Let it cure. The camera doesn’t go back on until the adhesive has set.

4

Static calibration. We remount the camera and place a target board at the distance, height and angle Audi specifies for your model, then run the calibration through the ADAS control module.

5

Check the result. We rescan the car to make sure the calibration finished and no driver assistance faults are left.

Most Audis take 2 to 3 hours for glass and calibration. Models with extra radar sensors can run longer.

OEM or OE-Equivalent Glass?

Audi’s camera is sensitive to the optics of the glass in front of it, so the windshield matters more than it does on an older car.

OEM

Made to Audi’s original spec for thickness, curvature and optical clarity. It’s the safe choice when the camera has to read the road through it, and on cars with a head-up display.

OE-equivalent

Built to match the factory spec, and sometimes what an insurer offers first. We only fit OE-equivalent glass from suppliers we trust with a camera behind it.

Because the camera needs glass that meets the original optical spec, you may have a case for OEM with your insurer. Ask us which glass we’d use. We’ll also deal with the carrier.

What Goes Wrong If You Skip It

A camera that’s badly off may bring up a driver assistance warning. A small error may not, and then the first sign is a feature getting it wrong:

  • Pre sense city brakes late or not at all
  • Adaptive cruise misjudges the gap
  • Lane warnings fire late or not at all
  • Sign recognition reads the wrong speed limit

None of these show up on a test drive around the block, which is why we verify the camera on the target board instead of by feel.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Audi windshield replacement with calibration cost?

It depends on the model, the glass (OEM or OE-equivalent) and which sensors your Audi has. Call (916) 472-2928 or use the form with your year and model and we’ll quote your car. If you’re going through comprehensive insurance, we work the claim directly with your carrier.

My Audi has matrix LED headlights. Does a new windshield affect them?

The lights themselves aren’t touched. The matrix high beam does rely on the windshield camera, though: it spots oncoming and leading cars and dims just the segments that would hit them. Calibrating the camera keeps that working.

Is the e-tron handled differently from a gas Audi?

The glass and the camera calibration are the same kind of job. We follow the steps Audi lists for that model, as we do for every Audi.

How long does it take?

Plan on 2 to 3 hours for the windshield and camera calibration. Models with additional radar sensors can take a little longer.

Can you do the calibration if another shop installed the glass?

Yes. Bring the car in and we’ll calibrate the camera. If the glass itself is the problem, we’ll tell you before we start.
